Not sure who did the pictures above the post, but they're not mine.

Knowing what my worst features are I don’t feel the need to have them amplified, hence I’ve always avoided caricaturists. However, at a recent event a friend and I were coaxed into sitting in front of one for a full three minutes each.

With an aperitif in hand I thought to myself this would be a whole lot easier after two or three drinks, and begged the poor artist to be kind.

Just like a doctor or a dentist can distract you from what’s about to happen Niall O’Loughlin had me laughing so much that I began to relax. Chatting about this and that I soon got into the swing of posing for my very own portrait. In fact, I actually quite enjoyed it.

And thankfully he was kind, generous in fact. I was given a great pout and a come-hither stare, if only I could replicate that in photographs!

This is a great idea for wedding party entertainment. Niall works so quickly that your guests could have their very own caricature done during the champagne reception.

Forget the wedding favours and provide guests with a very personal token from the day. It’s also a great way for guests to mingle as they chat about their likenesses and compare and contrast the pencil image to the real thing.

Sent invites out on Monday morning and the response has been unbelievable!!!

Even my father, who is rather traditional and serious, laughed his head off.

I have been getting texts since yesterday saying how well it suits us as a couple, how well done they are, how unique and funny ;-) exactly the response we hoped for!!

Only problem is a few texts said that the bar has been set high and can't wait for more surprises, ahhhh!!!

Had a fantastic night last Thursday in the Radisson Hotel Dublin. It was launch night of the Restaurant Brasserie de Verres en Vers.
It was a real who's who of the media in Dublin, and I made some great contacts. I was only supposed to be there for two hours, ended up staying for 5!!! needless to say the client was delighted.
I also ended up getting a taste of my own medicine, when a very attractive blonde lady decided to draw my caricature! as I said before, it's a tough job but someone has to do it.

Digital or Original wedding invite??

It's come to my attention that some artists who've recently started to do caricature wedding invitations, are playing on the notion that somehow there cards are better because theirs are "original" and not digitally enhanced!

So I'll use this post to point out a few of the pro's and cons of digital v original.

1 Firstly if you want an original you're more than welcome to have one, 99.9% of my gift caricatures are originals.

So why don't I do my invites this way?

We'll start with digital process and I'll explain how it works.

Firstly I sketch the couple until I'm happy with rough, I then clean up the drawing with various markers, scan it into photoshop and colour it with the various brushes etc, I then draw and scan additional elements such as dogs, props etc and add to them to the drawing. Sometimes I use actual photo's of the hotel if requested by the client, this gives the invites a very realistic look, which people often like, the choice is yours.
"
Everything I do either original or digital is " HAND DRAWN" , the above process is the only difference.

The main advantage of working this way is that it gives the client complete control over the artwork. Although 9 out of 10 times I'll get it right 1st time, my clients are encouraged to give their feedback to make sure they're a 100% happy with artwork. If they decide the likeness is not quite right I can easily tweak it, if they don't like the background, I can change it, if they'd like different colour flowers, no problem, if they want to add something or take something out, no problem either.
I can also also change the background to make evening invites, RSVP and thank you cards.

So what's the con?
Well there's none really, the real con is to imply that somehow each one is hand painted, which of course is impossible. At the end of the day, each card is a re-print of initial artwork be it original or digital.

Wedding in Knightsbrook 3/4/10

Brought my new toy to work with me yesterday for the wedding of Graham and Shabana, it's a kodak ki8 HD camcorder. I'm a sucker for gadgets and I thought with my up-coming trip to the states etc I'd treat myself to this. It's no bigger than your average phone and as you can see it also comes in handy for gigs as an alternative to taking photo's. It also made me realize I say "are you ready? and now there you go, allot!

Saturday I was working at the wedding of Jonathan and Edel in the Dunraven arms in the beautiful surroundings of Adare.
At first I thought the name of the hotel was a joke " done raving" which basically sums up marriage!(just kidding,,,well sort of)
Anyhow I didn't manage to take many photo's as there was a massive line from start to finish. I also think I broke my own personal record of doing more than 50 pictures in just over two hours, hence the lack of photo's I took.

Had a fantastic weekend in the RDS and I'm glad to say it looks like the recession has avoided weddings for another year.
At around 5.00 pm on Saturday the gorgeous(both in looks and personality) Amy Huberman, popped by to pose for this picture me.

The staff of the hotel were initially nervous about having caricatures done but when they saw the results and the reactions of the recipients they were more than happy and have decided they'd like to make it an ongoing thing. Here's just a couple from recent events, but the main reason I'm posting these is because Alan Kelly who is one of Irelands best videographers was kind enough to send me this video which he made at a recent wedding. Although many videographers have promised to send me the video, most never do, so this proves he's honest efficient and talented so book him now. This video also proves that no-one is faster than me at live work in Ireland as this video is not speeded up, I actually have a bionic arm!

BTW the Pele thing went amazing, just waiting on photo's etc but will tell you more next week.

I'm always harping on about the fact, that in life and especially when it comes to caricatures, "you get what you pay for". No matter how much I warn people, sometimes they think, well it's half the price how bad can it be! Here's a perfect example of a recent caricature a very disgruntled bride sent me. Don't get me wrong I don't get the likeness perfect every time and often I have to make minor corrections, but normally if the photo's are good enough I'll get it right 1st time. In this particular case neither of them saw any resemblance whatsoever! the main thing is in the end both bride and groom were happy and their cards where done on time and to a high standard.Yes maybe I do charge more than other artist's but I feel my work speaks for itself and if your going to do something, do it right.

Here's a recent gift caricature I did for a 21st birthday gift..
What makes this different, is that when I first gave to the client, although she was happy the mother wasn't, and thought it didn't look like him(often the case with mammy's). Anyhow they agreed to give it to him and let him decide, here's the emails I just got.

Just a quick note to say thank you. I got a caricture as gift from my family for my 21st birthday present. It was an excellent gift & summed me up in a nut shell. The night was a great laugh & fun was had by all. The caricature went down very well with everyone at the party. It now hangs proudly at home & brings a smile to everyones face when they see it.

Guinness 250 years!

Saturday night I was in the the Guinness store-house Dublin along with 3 of my fellow artists, Jon Donohue, Mark Heng and Ken Coogan, a big thanks to all the guys for their help. Didn't have much time to take pictures, but here's a few I did manage to squeeze in.

Wedding fair in the RDS

I had a hugely successful show in the RDS over the 5th and 6th of September.
I took more bookings over the weekend than ever before, and considering people don't normally book at the fair this was a real bonus. Here's a couple of pictures of my stand, I know it doesn't look busy but believe me it was insane, we had less than 5 mins break on both days and then I had to go off do weddings during the night, but that's a another story.BTW a huge thanks to my Sis in law Fiona who helped me out all weekend.

Here's some pictures I've managed to compile which were taken over the last month or so, from venues as far apart as Innishowen in Donegal to Adare in Limerick. Most if not all of these drawings were done in 3 minutes or less, so it's often a case of speed over substance, however I think the likness is good in most of them, and the main thing is the bride and groom were delighted and the guests who wanted to get drawn were not disappointed.

Just to let you know im even more delighted that i have selected you to do our wedding board. i have just been visiting my brother who is home from Australia with his wife for a holiday and their friends as a wedding present gave them a piece of your work. It was a drawing of my sister in law in her all blacks jersey and my brother wearing our dundalk football teams jersey, holding his favourite drink (Guinness). The resemblence of my brother in the picture is uncanny. Im sure it will take pride of place in their home in Oz. Cant wait til i get mine next year now!

Had a fantastic night in Buncrana on Saturday night.
The Bride and groom, Seamus and Catriona were two of nicest people I've ever met and went out of their way to make sure I felt like a guest and not someone working at the wedding. When Catriona heard I had arrived early she walked around the entire hotel in her wedding dress trying to find me to make sure I joined them for a meal.
Anyhow I kicked off drawing around 9.30 and finished up around 2'ish, a few pints were had had during the course of the night and the craic was mighty, I had at least 50 people surrounding me at any one time. Each drawing I revealed was greeted with cheers and howls of laughter. Both Seamus and Catriona both agreed it was the highlight of the day, and I was just glad everyone enjoyed themselves.

Hello Niall,
at long last I am getting some feedback to you about the invitations you did
for our New Year's Eve wedding!

First let me thank you for the fantastic job you did. Everyone commented on
how great they were and how like us they were - from 'The invite is feking
class' to 'Love the invites - worth keeping'! I was in my uncle's house a
month ago and he still has his sitting on the fireplace! We have the big
picture up in the landing and the same uncle just stops and stares at it
every time he is in the house!

The invites definitely set the right tone for the wedding. We were hoping
to get a 12 hour drinking session out of the day and that is exactly what we
got! Thank god for make up artists cus David and I were in the residents
bar at 3am the night before the wedding! It was great day!

I have attached a picture the photographer took that was inspired by your
art work. I must admit I think your version is much better!

everyone who is getting married or may one day host a corporate event!

Wedding fair in the RDS

Here's a couple of photo's of my stand at the Bride of the year show in the RDS last weekend.
For those of you who didn't know, a big part of my business is creating stationery and providing caricatures at weddings as form of entertainment.
This was my most elaborate and biggest stand by far, up to this I had a small space with a table that the cards were placed on, this was a much larger corner stall ,and as you can see I had proper display units and new pop up banners etc, however the piece that received the most attention was definitely my wedding guest board, I got the flower spray made during the week, and added a frame for the wow factor, and boy did it pay off! I also ran a competition over the weekend were-by everyone who signed their email address on it was entered into a competition to win their very own one free, so a huge congrats Elaine Hoffman in Navan who was the lucky winner.
I have to say I was worried that with the recession etc that the crowds wouldn't turn up and even worse they wouldn't book, but fortunately this was not case, my stationery is almost booked up for year and bookings for wedding caricatures are up on last year, although I found it very frustrating that 5 out of 10 couples are getting married on July the 18th which has been booked for me since last year!

Well as promised here's pictures I've drawn at various events over the last few weeks. Hopefully these will go some way to dis-spell the misconception that caricatures only emphasise peoples bad points, this of course is not true.BTW keep an eye for the gorgeous Joanna Murphy who was in this years Apprentice on TV3, she was known as the "bitch" and fired for cheating, she turned out to be the nicest (well one of the nicest)woman I've ever met.

Here's some photo's from a gig last night in the Guinness storehouse, which I did with my good friend and colleague Ken Coogan.
The event was a huge success for the organisers, and I hope myself and Ken contributed in some way to it being a really enjoyable evening for everyone.
The main things is the client was delighted, saying we were the best caricature artist's they've ever used at a gig.
